The Root chakra is called Muladhara in Sanskrit. The meaning of Muladhara is ‘root’ or ‘support’. The Root chakra is depicted as a four leafed lotus with a square in its centre in which a triangle facing downward is depicted.

This chakra is situated at the end of the spinal cord at the tail-bone in the back and the pubic bone in the front. The Root chakra is associated with survival and safety. All that you have achieved in the material world is derived from the energy of the first chakra. The life lesson this chakra teaches us is standing up for oneself.

When this chakra is blocked you may feel frightened, paranoid, insecure and frustrated. Physical problems that coincide with a blockage in this chakra are: obesity, anorexia nervosa, sore knees, arthritis, hip problems, problems of the lower back, the glandulae suprarenalis, the spinal cord and the reproductive organs.

Is Your First Chakra Healthy or Blocked?

Someone with a healthy first chakra will usually have a basic sense of security and safety in the world. They will be well- grounded, with “common sense.” The practical side of their life will usually function fairly smoothly. They will have a sense of having (or being able to get) enough material resources to meet their needs. They will likely be fairly at ease with their own body. Often, though not always, they will have a relatively healthy physical body, with healthy bones, feet, legs, colon and adrenal glands. Their bowels will function well and their weight will be in a healthy range.

If the first chakra is blocked, a person may feel overly fearful about security and survival. Perhaps they experience extreme anxiety or panic attacks. They may be ungrounded, flighty, fearful, and have a feeling of not really belonging anywhere. They may have a weak physical constitution and problems with their bones, feet, legs, colon or weight. They may lack common sense and be unable to “settle.” They may be unable to hold down a job or may move often. Sometimes an unhealthy first chakra will manifest in the opposite way with a person being overly practical, plodding, a creature of habit, unable to dream or imagine.

When one feels that there is no support system in one’s life or there is a lack of nurturing (or just a perceived lack), low back pain is usually the first symptom (can include sciatica). There can be blockages in the body including varicose veins, tumors or polyps in the rectal region, depression, immune-related disorders, mental or emotional problems, a lack of self- esteem, attachment to family background and beliefs and behaviors learned from them, superstitions, pain in the legs, feet and everything that flows down from the lower back into the toes.

Balanced Base Chakra:                  

Persons with a well balanced base chakra appear grounded and are usually very healthy, earthy types. They have the ability to stand up for themselves and are feeling at home with themselves and the world. They stand up for social issues of family, law and order. They also demonstrate a high level of self-mastery.

Overactive Base Chakra:

If the base chakra spins too fast it can affect people in the way in which they interact with their environment. It might manifest in behaviour such as bullying and self-centeredness. There is also the tendency to be overly materialistic and engage in physical foolhardiness like extreme sports or other forms of risk taking.

Under-Active Base Chakra:

If the base chakra is spinning very sluggishly or not at all, it affects the person’s ability to remain grounded. They may appear very spacey, incapable of inner stillness and have difficulties in achieving their goals. Life might be a constant struggle to provide for life’s necessities, always fearful and not feeling safe in their physical existence. Often issues like low-self esteem and self-destructive behaviour is associated with a blocked base chakra. They may appear to be emotionally needy and always looking for safety and security in groups.

Any diseases affecting the bones like osteoarthritis, chronic lower back pain, also sciatica and varicose veins are related to base chakra malfunction. Chakras are well know among the new age community, but the nature of chakras is often not that well understood. The text presented here is an attempt to shed more light on this issue.

The chakras in the human body are related to specific energies and consciousness, to endocrine glands, colors and psychic features. It is not always obvious to look for a linear connection between these systems, because the whole is more than the sum of the parts. If we tear out one part in order to analyze it, we might forget what its function is in relation to the whole. We can dissect a human body based upon the different biological systems or upon the different organs or upon the different cells but this would not explain a living being. Be aware that every explanation of the chakras is an approximation of what they really are. The following can help you to better understand what they are and how they function.

What is Above, is Below

In the cosmos, everything is present in everything. Macro cosmos and micro cosmos have the same nature. The laws of the micro cosmos are also present in the macro cosmos. At the source of all manifestations is unity, a cosmic consciousness not understandable for humans. This unity creates all manifestations from the subtle to the most dense matter. The most crystallized state of existence is the physical world we are living in. The crystallization process of consciousness went through seven stages hence the existence of seven worlds, seven bodies and seven levels of consciousness. Each of these spheres of existence has a power center, a concentrated field of energy that acts as a transformer to a higher or lower world. Each center is also directly connected with the ultimate source. This pattern is found in all fields of existence.

Therefore the seven major chakras reflect on different levels of existence, consciousness, worlds, colors, endocrine glands in the body and so on. They are like gates to the entire cosmos.

The Seven Major Chakras

The seven major chakras are situated in the sushumna channel, which is the main nadi in the very center of the spine. Nadis are ethereal or subtle energy, channels for vital energy in the body. The names of the seven major chakras are:

Tantric Story of Chakra

In the beginning Shiva and Shakti (the male and female principles of Cosmic Energy or Consciousness) were united in the cosmic Sahasrara lotus. When Shakti (as a woman she represents power) left Shiva, six lotus flowers (the chakras) sprang up from her foot prints. Leaving Shiva in this way, she created the entire universe from its most subtle realm to the most crystallized one. Each chakra left behind in the process of creation corresponds with one of these realms. This process of creation is also present within man, from the Sahasrara chakra on the crown of the head down to the spine to Muladhara or the root chakra where Shakti now resides. At one point in time Shakti will rise up again and join her partner Shiva. Then she will take her entire creation with her and live in unity again.

Chakras distribute the energy throughout the energy body via energy channels ultimately controlling and energizing the major and vital organs of the physical body.

The state of a person’s chakras and hence the energy body represents the physical health of a person. The chakras are also centres for psychological functions. Spiritual lesson from this chakra is to learn how to eliminate our need to control everything in our lives and open ourselves to surrender our beliefs in right or wrong and making judgments about everything. It also makes us realize that we are safe and protected by consciousness at all times.

The Manipura chakra, located on the naval, energizes the digestive system. It is connected to our personal power, that is, our level of self-esteem and self-confidence within ourselves. Naturally, the more belief we have in ourselves and our abilities, the more likely we will be in succeeding. Self-confidence enables us to easily silence the negative voices that arise in our heads, replacing negative statements like “no I cannot” with positive affirmations such as “yes I can!” On a psychological level it is associated with courage, perseverance, motivation and the desire to win. Motivation and desire to win serve as the necessary fuel to “fight” on, especially during those critical moments when the challenge appears to be just too great. The Heart chakra, located in the heart, controls the thymus gland, the heart and blood. It is naturally linked to our ability to love, to feel compassion, to be considerate and act in kindness. The more passionate we are about our goals and beliefs, the higher the chance of success. It is also related to our ability to learn from previous experiences, enabling us to make better decisions in the future. Furthermore, it is associated with our level of willpower, stamina and discipline. Such qualities are typically relied on during the most difficult or tedious parts of a challenge or project. This chakra makes us release our limiting and rigid beliefs and affirm that

Finally, the Crown chakra, which is located at the top of the head, controls the pineal gland and upper brain. Spiritually it represents our connection to our soul and creator. Having a clear vision of the bigger picture means that the goals we will endeavor to achieve will inevitably be far more fulfilling. Now if we were to do an honest stock take of ourselves on each these qualities, we would discover, as expected, that we are strong in some areas but not so strong in others. There are some that may be strong in qualities originating from the lower chakras and hence have the required ability to execute but lacking connection with others or have no sense of purpose and fulfillment. There may be others strong in traits found in the higher chakras, that is, have the required intelligence, a strong sense of purpose and in some cases, highly intuitive but lack the capability to execute effectively. And of course there are those who exhibit a mixed combination of the above.

The key to success and happiness is achieving the right balance. We therefore need to develop those qualities that are lacking and continue to enhance further the other traits that come more naturally. You can do a personal self assessment based on the qualities associated with each chakra. You can then elect to systematically focus on each chakra for a period of time and work on improving those qualities. This approach requires you to be quite honest and retrospectively analytical. A lot can be said about this and other similar style approaches and will be the subject of future articles.
